The Novel - Discussion #4

We begin to understand early in the novel that Amir is constantly vying for Baba's attention and often feels like an outsider in his father's life, as seen in the following passage: "He'd close the door, leave me to wonder why it was always grown-ups time with him. I'd sit by the door, knees drawn to my chest. Sometimes I sat there for an hour, sometimes two, listening to their laughter, their chatter." Discuss Amir's relationship with Baba.

Baba knows Amir is his son only because he witnessed his birth. Amir is the complete opposite of his Baba. Their relationship is not that of a family. They barely speak to each other or spend quality time together. Baba finds reasons to keep himself busy, either working at his orphanage or discussing business in his study. When they do go out, Baba always brings Hassan along. They only have a handful of father to son moment and conversation. Amir feels like a ghost in the house, just wandering along. Most of the time he’s in his room reading books or studying. Amir even pretends to have an interest in soccer just to have something in common with Baba.

Baba could be just constantly blaming Ammir for the death of his wife. This is why despite Ammir's desperate efforts nothing seems to please his dad. There are only two occasions where Baba has left the past behind. When Ammir won the kite competition, and when he got married to Soraya. In the end he’s always resentful of Ammir, making him loose the love of his life. That's probably why their relationship was broken since the beginning.

Baba is being unreasonable with his son, he totally rejects him. Baba might just feel the pressure of living with Amir because he witnessed the birth but the child means nothing to him.

Baba views Amir as his son for one reason - he witnessed the boys birth. It is possible that Baba holds blame against Amir for the death of his wife, which is exacerbated by several other traits in Amir. For one, Baba held sports in high regard, soccer in particular. Try as he might, he could not get his only son to share his immense interest in the game. Also, while Baba was social, outgoing and ever the life of the party, Amir was withdrawn and introverted. He preferred to spend time alone in his room reading and writing stories.
In one part of the story, when Amir and Baba are leaving their home country, Baba defends a womans' honor in the back of a truck. He is willing to die to protect a stranger, while Amir is terrified for his fathers' life and begs him to be silent. Baba is infuriated that once again his son proves to be the opposite of what he is as a man.
Throughout his life Amir is desperately vying for his fathers love and approval, but the times that Baba offers it are few and far between.

Amir is Baba's son. But Baba is blames Amir for the death of his wife. Amir sends his leisure time exploring through his mother's books and learn new things. But Baba wants to him to stay out of the books. He wants Amir to be more like his father, the type to play sports and someone who isn't afraid of almost anything. Baba tries to knock some sense into his head and be more like him, but Amir has no interest. He did pretend to have a little bit of interest in soccer so that his father would like. Amir crawls up against the door to listen to the grown ups because he wants to have that bond with his father, too.

Baba witnessed Amir's birth that is why he believes he is his son, he refuses to admit that they are not the same and share nothing in common. Amir feels left out and with just one father to son conversation he feels happy. He even pretend to like soccer just to so Baba could think they have something in common and it shouldn't be that way.

Baba and Amir’s relationship is not one of a father and son. Sure Baba does give Amir the essential necessities, roof, food, and bed, but Baba does not give out the fatherly love that Amir deplorably needs. Is it because Baba admonisheses Amir for his wife’s death or is it the unrelenting stream of disappointments from Amir that never seems to portent Baba? For example the way Amir describes Baba face of abhorrence over Amir crying, a face of huge disappointment and embarrassment, or the time when Baba witness Amir aghast over a brawl with neighborhood kids and embraced Hassan for fighting. Thus the reason behind Amir’s obsession with his mother books because he has no real relationship with his father; therefore he is trying to have a kinship to his mother. Amir in Kabul is in a constant endeavors to enthuse is father that why Amir felt obligated to win the kite fighting competition, and during the competition there is no wonder why Amir took glances at his father and seeks his approval. Another critical incident in Baba and Amir’s relationship is when Baba refuses radioactive treatment for his condition, Amir muddled about Baba’s decision he asks Baba “Why, what about me?” and Baba replies “What have I been trying to teach this whole time.” At this point it brings the past back to Amir, the times in Kabul when he gets sick in the car, or the time Baba almost died defending the woman in the transport. It probably made Amir fathoms he would never live up to Baba expectations.

Baba has two sons, but he can only recognize Amir as his since he is the legitimate son, while Hassan is half Hazara. He feels incredibly guilty that one of his sons is privileged, and the other a servant. He resents Amir because he is the lucky one, so he doesn't treat him like a son. Instead, he favors Hassan.
